That was me. I think you may be right about that now that I think
about it. The solution may just be a higher pressure cap in most
cases but engines run better at the higher temps too if they are set
up for it. The 60's vintage may fare better if run cooler but after
about 73 you need more than 160 or they won't run as well.

This is an old problem which I understand has been fixed, at least
improved on so that it's no quite so apparent.

Again this was an old engineering problem that has been resolved for
many years. Some off road
tires still say to keep them on the same
side due to tread pattern and the installer has to mount them
correctly as well.

else around while your are doing your set up even the SWMBO unless she has
already done a swapout or
engine rebuild (-64Falcon V8 eons ago).

I am going to South Texas for about a week, as soon as I get
back I will be putting in the new "electronic" distributor in my
truck
and I will let you all know how it goes.

South Texas from where your at that's not very far. Ooops Forgot where TAMU
actually was.. Enjoy the fishing or whatever.....

Don, the frame widths from 65-72 are the same so you should be
able to use them with no problems.

Guys,

you've got me all in a twist now. I'm putting a 61 390 (out of a car)
into a 1963 truck.

I've had two opinions on this so far. One says to buy the V8 motor
mounts for the year of the truck (was 272). The other says to buy the
motor mounts that fit the engine (out of a 61 thunderbird).

Which is it?

From: John Strauss
Subject: FTE 61-79 - Possible engine swap FE -> 385

As you know because I talk about it everyday, I have just bought a '68
F-250 w/360 FE and C6. The engine hasn't run in at least 10 years but I
fired it up on Saturday. Well it doesn't have compression for squat (might
get better if it runs more, don't know yet) and the timing chain is real
loose. Since the 360 was not a real powerhouse to begin with, I question
whether this engine is worth the investment. If I find the rear seal
leaking (very likely after so many years sitting) then it has to go.

So I am already dreaming about what to put in it's place. As this truck is
going to serve as my tractor, I want as big a motor as I can get. So I am
thinking 385-series unless a good 390 or 428 falls in my lap. Right now I
see way more folks selling 460s and a few 429s.

Finally, the question: What can I expect as far as hassle factor to
replace the FE with a 385 motor? I guess my only real concern is the motor
mounts. I already know the C6 will bolt up, the exhaust is shot anyway,
but will I need different frame mounts, different motor mounts, or neither?
Accessory brackets are only alternator and A/C so I'll just try to get a
motor with that stuff already in place. Is there anything else I need to
be aware of when contemplating this?

Also, are there specific years to get or stay away from when looking for a
429 or 460? I just want something running that I can drop in as is. TIA.

I heartily agree that 160 is much to cold for good performance or
economy and also accelerates engine wear. There's a reason that most
OEM's are currently using thermos in the 185+ range!
Higher coolant temps promote better efficiency and lower engine wear IF
You can keep the coolant from boiling and IF You can keep the oil temps
from getting to high...
I run a 195 thermo in my FE390 with a good stock radiator and electric fans
and it never overheats even under prolonged idling on the nastiest hot days.

Subject: FTE 61-79 - Re: FTE 61-79 Ken's Gold

Ken,

I just finished up on pulling Stu's old A/C apart. I put in a new heater
core and blower motor. I figured since the unit was out I'd replace
anything on the interior that may go bad. I don't want to go into this
thing again. I hope to have the unit installed by this weekend and
ready to go to the shop to have the unit purged and charged with
R-12. I checked into the R-134 conversion. Everything should work
but has a higher head pressure that R-12. Also, the molecular
structure of the R-134 is a lot smaller that R-12. What I was told, was
that a non-leaking R-12 system may not even be able to hold R-134
due to leaks. If you have the old type A/C hoses, be very careful.
They are expensive to replace. I just spent $223 to have new ones
made. They're nice, but OUCH!!

I don't know if yours had A/C before or not. You may want to check the
bolt hole configuration on the fire wall. My old heater unit had 3 bolts
holding it on the firewall. The A/C unit has two bolts for the lip of the
dash and 2 bolt through the firewall. Looking at the firewall from in fron=
t
of the truck the left hole that was used with the heater lined up. The=20
right
didn't exist. But....., there is a dimple about 1-1/2" down from the top
right bolt hole for the old heater unit. Drill that out and it should line=
=20
up
with the unit. Mine came out of Stu's '71 and has '67 and '68 part numbers
all through it. I believe they will be the same.

I hope this helps some.

Enjoyed meeting you, Peggy and all the other FTE folks at Pigeon Forge.
I can't believe that guy sold my manifold at 2:30 am. Oh well, I'll keep=20
looking!

Azie, I think you know what color necks are around Chinquapin!

I've already got the two belt pulley on mine so I won't have
to worry about it. Glad you mentioned it though so I can make

I had a set of radial snow tires back in the 70's that probably were
flipped side to side; both of failed the same way- the sidewalls split
catastrophically.

to try. Good luck.
