Any ideas??? > thanks I can think of two reasons: 1) The filter has reduced the throttling effect of the stock air filter so you can get more air into the engine. This could increase peak compression pressure and lead to pinging. This should only show up under full throttle. 2) The new air filter has a different noise conduction path and allows you to hear the pinging that was always there (my number 1 guess). 3) You just happen to buy a new tank of gas around the same time as the air filter was installed and the pinging and air filter change are not related. 4) The new air filter draws in hotter air which might lead to pinging (not likely). 5) The air filter "confuses" the mass air flow sensor and you are now running a leaner mixture (I don't know if your truck has a Mass Air Flow Sensor, my old F150 doesn't). I suppose even if you don't have a MAF sensor the change in the inlet track might "confuse" the sensors enough to slightly change your mixture and lead to pinging. Netscape's has a lot to recommend it, like seeing attached ".gif" files right in your message. I've not had any complaints to date from my postings, but maybe people are being nice and not flaming me. For what it's worth, I have my Mail preferences set to "allow 8-bit" not "MIME", which is the other choice. Of course Netscape has things I don't like, like the address book, and the fact that I can't use the "vi" editor. :^) Now THAT should bring on the flames! Thanks for the tip on Eudora. I'll check it out. I can use it if it is SMTP/POP3 compliant--which I thought eudora was not. Thanks for maintaining this list, too--you've got a lot of people to keep happy. I've got a '95 Ranger Splash with the 4.0L and a 5 spd. (Regular cab - 2 wd) When I go to shift sometimes and am rolling forward, with the clutch in, I get a loud buzz or grating noise from the handle --- almost like you were trying to shift without the clutch in. The weird part is the clutch is flat on the floor. I've questioned myself before on whether I had the clutch all the way in, but I *KNOW* it's been all the way in and yet I've got the weird noise. I've never had it happen in any other gear other than the 2nd-1st shift. I don't think it happens with the truck stopped. Any hints???? Thanks in advance!! Brown" Subject: Re: PINGING Ok, bud, here's some things to try (just went through hell to find some pinging in my Bronco!): The filter *should* not cause pinging in and of itself. It should give you a bit more power (not a lot) and a bit better mileage (if you keep your foot off the floor). FIRST & FOREMOST, insure that it is pinging by adding a bottle of octane booster. STP & 104+ are two brands that have a good reputation. If the pinging under acceleration stops, then we can analyze further. If it continues, then it may not be pinging (detonation). Anything loose along your exhaust & possibly your transmission can sound like a ping. Check your plugs & plug wires. Run truck in the dark (closed garage) with hood open to check for arcing on wires. Don't run too long in the garage or you'll get carbon monoxide poisoning! You'll see it quickly if it's there (remember to unplug the hood light). Your plugs will have a red dust on them if you used 104+ (not sure about STP) that looks like rust. Ignore that. Find a HAYNES manual & look on the back cover for color pictures of spark plug readings. Obviously, replace em if they are old. If they are new, you can try one heat range cooler (ask at the parts counter at your local auto parts store). Most guys I know don't believe in using platinum plugs of any sort. They prefer copper core (cheaper!) & just replace them more often (Autolite copper core are about $.80 each!). Their reasoning is that copper is a much better conductor, it just doesn't last as long as platinum. Check your timing (or have it checked). It is possible that the timing has advanced over the years & needs to be set again. Vacuum leaks can cause pinging by affecting vacuum advance. Put a piece of rubber hose to one ear & run the other end along vacuum hoses & connections while the truck is idling. If you hear hissing, you have a leak. Your K&N (if purchased new) should've been pre-oiled from the factory. If you added oil on top of that, that's no good. Wash it & re oil per instructions. It's possible that you just noticed the pinging because you were testing out the K&N by stepping on it more than usual, but it may have been there for a while. Pinging is *usually* associated with gasoline burning too quickly because of hot spots in the cylinder (detonation). Higher octane gas burns slower, so it can prevent the detonation. Try all of the above, then take it to a mechanic if you can't find a problem. 180,000 miles is quite a bit if you pushed it hard & it hasn't been rebuilt. Often ignition system replacement is necessary for your forays into throttle stomping. (MSD, ACCEL, JACOBS, etc all make good replacement systems that can be less than $200). Don't spend any money though, until you're sure you need it. good luck (and yes, my "pinging" turned out to be a loose heat shield on my exhaust!) steve > Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 08:37:24 -0700 (PDT) > From: "John W.
