I pulled the cover/throwout guide and now I have some questions regarding the assembly. Since the seal is installed backwards in the cover, do I have to find a piece of pipe or a socket that will fit inside the seal lip in order to press it in without damaging it? And the input shaft has a little side to side play, Should I or can I replace the bearing or is this just the normal preload of this bearing? It hasnt been a problem, I am just taking preventative measures.Also, after I get the engine in I was thinking about replacing the output seal and I need to know if there is any sort of crush sleeve proceedure and can I work the yoke nut off with an impact wrench? I put poly bushings in my bronco and it has made the steering response more mushy but the ride quality is a little better now. It doesn't wander it just feels like pushing your fist into a soft foot ball when you turn a corner etc. but that's primariy due to the track bar flex and it's bushing in my case. The dist is on my 460 in my 1970 Don't shoot me if you've already looked into this but it's my opinion that the engine never sees all the advance available in the vac when under any load but due to lean idle mixture etc. needs the extra advance for best idle smootheness. The vac will only be fully open on decelleration and at idle but the point where this happens can be adjusted with the spring tension. Consider this: at 60 mph you get about 14" on the vac, on decelleration maybe 25" and at idle maybe 20". At any throttle opening under load you get less than 14 so what ever it puts in at 14 is essentially what you're concerned with and this can be adjusted again with the spring pressure. There are several vac's which work with this distributor but since they are all lean burn versions they will probably have 30 degrees or so built in but will have different spring rates which will effectively move the advance where you want it IMHO at least. I will be playing with this myself soon, perhaps this weekend :-) The 10 - 12 initial and 34 - 38 degree total timing you keep hearing about is for racing where the engine basically runs at WOT all the time and in the case of a performance street machine the vac is out of the loop under these conditions anyway so the key IMHO (and I'm going to test this in the next few days) is to get the vac to drop out of the loop soon enough to avoid spark knock at low rpms which can be accomplished, again with the spring pressure. (I hope) If you really think you need to block it you can remove the stator plate and put a screw in it as a stop. The plate is soft steel and can be drilled and tapped. Yesterday, he bought himself another truck a 95 of which I am not going to mention on this list. So the F350 is out of the picture and my 79 F150 is providing me an excellent service. I wish to thank all the fellows who took the time to reply to me and especially to Garry for your advice. He did replace the plastic bushings and he says it's the long steering box, but he was fed up with it. Thank Again, fellows.
